Biography

Luther W. Horton is the founding partner of Horton, Oberrecht & Kirkpatrick, now retired. Admitted to the California Bar in 1973, he graduated cum laude from Louisiana Tech in 1969 — where he was student body president — and earned his law degree from Tulane University in 1973 with honors, including the Order of the Coif, serving as managing editor of the law review.

He clerked for Judge Wallace of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals before joining Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps, where his work focused on personal injury, products liability, insurance bad faith, construction defect, and insurance defense. A partner there from 1979 until 1992, he left to form his own firm.

A past chairman of the Tort and Insurance Section of the San Diego County Bar Association and a member of ABOTA, Luther has been a Continuing Education of the Bar (CEB) lecturer on the fundamentals of personal-injury litigation. He has tried over 80 jury trials across San Diego, Orange, Imperial, and Los Angeles Counties, specializing in catastrophic injuries and brain-damage cases.
